General Description
A VCUG is an exam of the bladder and lower urinary tract or urethra using contrast material and x-rays. A VCUG is recommended after frequent urinary tract infections (U.T.I.), but cannot be performed during an active U.T.I.

What to Expect
Your urologist will catheterize you before the procedure, which may take place in the Diagnostic Imaging Department or the urologist's office. Then contrast material will be introduced into the catheter and drip into the bladder. Images will be taken when 1) your bladder is full, 2) while you are emptying your bladder, and 3) when your bladder is empty. After the procedure, there may be a little blood in your urine and you may feel a burning sensation the first few times you urinate. This is normal and will subside. Your doctor will receive a written report approximately 48 hours after the scan.

How to Prepare

  1. Let the technologist know if you are allergic to x-ray dye or iodine.
  2. Inform your urologist if you are pregnant.
  3. Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment and bring the requisition provided by your physician.
