USHC's New CAD System Acts as "Spell Checker" for Medical Images
[SOUTH EUCLID, OH]. -- [July 1], 2004 - This year approximately 200,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and studies show that up to 23% of breast cancers can be detected earlier. University Suburban Health Center's Mammography Division recently purchased new technology called ImageChecker, a Computer-Aided Dectection (CAD) system that serves as a "second pair of eyes" for physicians reading mammograms. The system could result in earlier detection because it analyzes images and draws the radiologist's attention to suspicious features that may be indicative of cancer.
This is how it works: a University Hospitals of Cleveland radiologist comprehensively reviews the mammogram first and then activates the ImageChecker to see if any areas need additional review. If the image is marked, then the radiologist returns to the original mammogram to review that area of the image in more detail.
USHC has invested in the CAD ImageChecker to enhance the quality of care given to its patients.
