General Description
A Small Bowel Study is a series of x-rays that is used to investigate different problems with the small bowel.

What to Expect
After drinking barium, x-rays of your small bowel will be taken every 15 minutes until the barium has traveled the entire length of the small intestine. After your study, increase your fluid intake for a few days to rid your small intestine of the remaining barium. Your doctor will receive a written report approximately 48 hours after the study.

How to Prepare

  1. You will need to take 1 - 2 tablespoons of Milk of MagnesiaŽ the evening before the study.
  2. Continue to take any medications you normally would with a minimal amount of water.
  3. If you are a diabetic, then please bring food and/or medications that you need during this time.
  4. Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment and bring the requisition provided by your physician.
