General Description
An IVP (Intravenous Pyelogram) is an x-ray test that uses dye to show your urinary system (the kidneys, ureters and bladder). It is used in finding stones, malformations or blockages in the urinary tract.

What to Expect
The technologist will inject dye into a vein with a small needle. The dye is used to enhance your urinary system. As the dye passes through the kidneys, the ureters and the bladder, timed x-rays will be taken that will show the function of each. The small needle will be removed at the end of the procedure. Your doctor will receive a written report approximately 48 hours after the test.

How to Prepare

  1. You must have a blood test (B.U.N. and Creatinine) no more than three months before the IVP is performed. If you need such a blood test, then contact your physician.
  2. Pick up a bottle of Fleet Phospho-SodaŽ in Suite 026.
  3. The day before the exam:
    1. Between 4 -6 p.m., drink the bottle of Fleet Phospho-SodaŽ immediately followed by two glasses of water (6 - 8 oz. each).
    2. Have a liquid dinner (e.g., broth, juice, tea, coffee).
    3. Do not eat or drink after midnight.
    4. If you are taking the drug GlucophageŽ, do not take it after midnight prior to your test. You may begin taking it again 48 hours after the completion of the test. A blood test may be ordered by your physician after the 48-hour period to determine that your renal function is normal. GlucophageŽ may then be restarted. Contact your physician if you have any questions.
  4. The day of the exam:
    1. Do not eat or drink until the procedure is completed. If you are a diabetic, bring food and/or medications that you will need after the procedure.
    2. You may take any required medication (except GlucophageŽ) as needed with a minimal amount of water. If you have any concerns or questions regarding the medications that you are taking, contact your physician.
    3. Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment and bring the requisition provided by your physician.
