General Description
A Hip Joint Injection of a steroid medication is performed to reduce inflammation and pain. To ensure the proper placement of the medication, the procedure is performed using x-ray equipment. The injections are useful for arthritis, hip, groin or leg pain.

What to Expect
You will be asked to lie on an x-ray table. After cleaning and preparing an area of skin, the physician will insert a needle into the joint and an anesthetic and steroid medication will be slowly injected. During the procedure, the pain will increase temporarily. Once the medication reaches the inflamed area, the pain will subside. You may have some discomfort near the injected area for about two to three days. Your physician will receive a written report approximately 48 hours after the procedure.

How to Prepare

  1. There is no special preparation for this procedure, but please make arrangements to have someone drive you home.
  2. Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment and bring the requisition provided by your physician.
