General Description
An ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves instead of radiation to produce images of the body. An ultrasound is useful in examining many of the body's organs including the liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, arteries, veins, breasts as well as a growing fetus. An ultrasound of the breast can help determine if a lump is a cyst or a solid mass, which could be cancer.

What to Expect
The scan is a safe, painless and non-invasive procedure. A technologist will apply a warm jelly to the skin and move a transducer, which looks like a microphone, over the area of the body being examined. The transducer emits and receives sound waves that "bounce" off internal organs and tissues. A computer then converts these sound wave echoes into an image that is displayed on a monitor. Your doctor will receive a written report approximately 48 hours after the scan.

How to Prepare

  1. No preparation is required for ultrasounds of the breast, scrotum (testicles), thyroid, parathyroid, neck and vascular (Iliac, Femoral, Pelvic, Popliteal and any other limb).
  2. Preparation instructions for ultrasounds of other organs will be provided at the time the appointment is scheduled.
  3. Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment and bring the requisition provided by your physician.
