General Description
A Thyroid Uptake and Scan uses a special camera that take pictures of the thyroid after a small amount of a radioactive substance makes it visible. (The level of radioactivity is extremely low and has no side effects.) The scan is used to evaluate the function, size, shape and location of the thyroid.
What to Expect
You must schedule two appointments for a Thyroid Uptake and Scan. At your first visit, the technologist will ask you questions that pertain to the thyroid and give you two capsules to swallow that contain a small amount of a radioactive substance. You will return within 24 hours, unless your doctor has requested otherwise. At your second visit, you will lie on a padded table with a camera positioned above you and the scan will be performed. The scan will take approximately 1 - 1½ hours to complete. Your physician will receive a written report approximately 48 hours after the scan.
- There are no dietary restrictions before or after the scan.
- Certain medications will affect your test. At the time of your appointment, please provide a list of all prescription and brand-name medications that you take, including cough syrup, vitamins and thyroid medication.
- Wear clothing that opens at the neck.
- Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment and bring the requisition provided by your physician.
