General Description
A Renal (Kidney) Flow and Function Scan uses a special camera that takes pictures of the kidney(s) after a small amount of a radioactive substance makes them visible. (The level of radioactivity is extremely low and has no side effects.) The scan is used to determine the kidney's blood flow and urinary tract function.
What to Expect
You will be given an intravenous (IV) injection of a small amount of a radioactive substance. You will be asked to lie on your back on a padded table with a camera positioned above you. Images of your kidney(s) will be taken immediately after the injection. If your doctor has ordered the scan with the aid of Lasix®, a diuretic, then you will receive a second injection at the end of the first scan. A second scan of the kidney will then be taken. The scan will take approximately one hour without Lasix® and 1½ hours with Lasix®. Your doctor will receive a written report approximately 48 hours after the scan.
- There are no dietary restrictions before or after the scan.
- Continue to take any medications you normally would, unless your physician has instructed otherwise.
- Drink three small (6 - 8 oz.) glasses of water at least 30 minutes before your appointment. Just prior to the scan, you will be asked to empty your bladder.
- The technologist will ask you for your height and weight.
- Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment and bring the requisition provided by your physician.
