General Description
An H. Pylori Breath Test detects active H. Pylori infection, which can cause ulcers, in the stomach and upper part of the small intestine.
What to Expect
You will be asked to swallow a capsule containing a small amount of a radioactive substance using a small amount of water. After 10 minutes, you will be asked to blow into a balloon through a straw. The test will take approximately 15 - 20 minutes. Your doctor will receive a written report approximately 48 hours after the test.
- Do not eat or drink six hours prior to the test.
- Do not take antibiotics or any medication containing bismuth (such as, Pepto Bismol®) one month prior to taking the test.
- Do not take Prilosec®, Prevacid® or Carafate® for two weeks prior to the test.
- Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment and bring the requisition provided by your physician.
